SAGEM ISDN PPP allows you to connect a stand-alone Macintosh to a remote TCP/IP or AppleTalk network through ISDN lines with Point-to-Point Protocol (64Kbps) or Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (128Kbps)
SAGEM ISDN PPP v1.06 runs on any Macintosh with :
• System 7.6, 7.5 , 7 5.1, 7.5.3, 7.5.5, 7.6 with MacTCP 2.06 (or later) or OpenTransport 1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.2 installed
• System 7.5.2 with MacTCP 2.06 (by de-activating OpenTransport 1.08), but it is mostly recommended to upgrade your system in 7.5.3.
SAGEM ISDN PPP was designed to be used only with Planet-ISDN and Meet-Me cards, ISDN GeoPort Adapter and TheWave software.
Please follow the steps below to install and use your new PPP software.
1 - Installation of SAGEM ISDN PPP
Use the Installer for an automatic installation
A- TCP/IP configuration
Refer to chapter 2 if you are using MACTCP, to chapter 3 if you are using OpenTransport
2 - TCP/IP configuration using MacTCP 2.06
You must install MacTCP if it isn't yet present on your Macintosh.
Open MacTCP in your Control Panels folder, then select SAGEM ISDN PPP in the icon list .
Note : when more than 3 icons are displayed, MacTCP sometimes hightlights several icons at a time. If you are not sure whether the driver is actually selected, just click on the first one in the list, close MacTCP, then open it again and choose SAGEM ISDN PPP.
Such problem can also occur when upgrading your PPP software. Apply the previous hint in that case as well.
Then click on the More button and choose Server in the Obtain Address area.
In the Domain field, enter the Domain Name Server Information of the remote IP network. This information is given to you by your Internet provider, or by the remote network manager.
Click OK and restart your Macintosh
3 - TCP/IP configuration using OpenTransport
You must have previously installed Open Transport version 1.1 or higher
Open TCP/IP in your Control Panels folder. Go to the menu Edit and choose User Mode. Then select the Advanced radio button.
Click on the OK button.
Choose the SAGEM ISDN item in the popup menu Connect via.
Note : If this item does not appear, restart your Macintosh one more time.
Then choose Using PPP Server from the Configure: menu.
Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Network Administrator will tell you how to obtain your IP Address (Manually, Using BootP Server, DHCP Server, or PPP Server).
a) For "Configure:Manually"
In the TCP/IP dialog, you need to Enter the IP address that your Admin. or ISP gives you.
b) For "Using PPP Server"
You must type in a non-null address for the Name Server Address in order to get outside your host domain. (This is the most common implementation of PPP, where the host assigns you an IP address during connection negotiation. This doesn't always have to be the case, and you should check with your Internet Service Provider as to your particular method of IP assignment).
You should also enter your Domain Name Server (DNS) addresses in this starting domain name box. DNS values for Aimnet are shown in this example.
You may have to restart your Mac in order to make these changes permanent.
B-AppleTalk configuration in classic networking architecture
Refer to chapter 4 if you are using Network, to chapter 5 if you are using OpenTransport
4- Open Network in your Control Panels folder, then select SAGEM ISDN PPP in the icon list.
As soon as you choose SAGEM ISDN PPP in the control panel, and each time you restart with SAGEM ISDN PPP selected, AppleTalk will generate traffic and try to get information about its current zone.
SAGEM ISDN PPP will so try to connect if the option Automatic Call is checked.
For that reason, we recommend you to use carefully the option Automatic Call when Appletalk over SAGEM ISDN PPP is active.
5 - AppleTalk configuration using Open Transport 1.1.1
You must have previously installed Open Transport version 1.1.1.
Open AppleTalk in your Control Panels folder, then select SAGEM ISDN PPP in the menu.
As for the classic networking architecture, we recommend you to use carefully the option Automatic Call when Appletalk over SAGEM ISDN PPP is active. (see remark in the previous section)
6 - Configuration of SAGEM ISDN PPP
Open SAGEM ISDN PPP located in your Control Panels folder :
Enter the Call Number of the remote site, and then your Name and Password if necessary. Such information is given to you by your provider. SAGEM ISDN PPP will automatically use PAP or CHAP protocol, according to the peer request.
Then select your underlying hardware. Choosing TheWave will open a configuration dialog. Please report to TheWave User's Guide if needed.
Select the physical Slot if you are a Planet-ISDN card user.
Check the 56k rate adaptation box if you are connecting to a 56 Kbps ISDN network.
Note : The profile used by Planet and Meet-Me cards or the ISDN GeoPort Adapter is named "PlanetPPP" and uses the HDLC mode. If your internet provider is offering another ISDN protocol such as X75, use the Profiler Application of your hardware to change the protocol in the "PlanetPPP" profile.
Check Automatic call if you want SAGEM ISDN PPP to connect automatically upon network traffic, e.g. when launching Netscape or when checking E-mail with Eudora.
Set up Idle timeout if you want SAGEM ISDN PPP to hang up after an idle period of time. Connection will be automatically re-opened later on, according to Automatic call flag.
Choose the default connection speed :
64 Kbit/s and 128 Kbit/s will always connect either 1 or 2 channels, until you change the setting.
Automatic speed will first connect 1 channel, and then connect and disconnect the second channel depending on the bandwith used. You must use more than 90% of the bandwith of the first channel for few seconds before connecting automatically the second one.
In case you internet provider does not support PPP, you can change the protocol to Raw IP. Identification and multilink will be disabled in that case.
SAGEM ISDN PPP offers you the possibility to have a list of different settings, and to save the parameters related to different sites or Internet providers. Save your settings by selecting Add settings... in the Settings popup menu, and name them. They will then appear in the popup menu.
Any change to the current settings will reset the name to custom. Just save the settings again with the same name to save changes.
Choose Remove settings... to remove the selected name from the settings menu.
7 - Connection with SAGEM ISDN PPP
You are now ready to connect to the remote site.
Click on the Connect button.
Channel 1 and Channel 2 show the current status of the lines.
The line is available for traffic when channel 1 or 2 shows IP Opened message.
Once connected, the speed bar will indicate the actual bandwith used during the last few seconds.
Various messages indicate intermediate PPP states and can help you in tracking connection problems.
If the peer supports Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol, the connection speed menu will allow you to dynamically connect or disconnect the second B-channel.
Now launch your internet browser and enjoy surfing the net…
8 - Using SAGEM ISDN PPP Control Strip
SAGEM ISDN PPP can be connected and disconnect via a control strip.
Drop SAGEM ISDN PPP Status in your Control Strip Modules folder and restart.
From the control strip, you will be able to monitor the line, to connect, to disconnect and to open TCP/IP and SAGEM ISDN PPP control panel.
9 - Solving connectivity problems
To help you solving connectivity problems, SAGEM ISDN PPP is able to trace the negociation between your Macintosh and you Internet provider.
Hold down the option-key when connecting (Connect button will turn to Connect and trace), and disconnect when finished or wait for connection failure.
Open SAGEM ISDN PPP Log in your Preferences folder.
SAGEM ISDN PPP always append traces to the same file. Just remove it if you want to clear the logs or if you don't need it anymore.
